Malibu ??

Ah, Yes, Bakersfield........at Famoso, one mile square of asphalt. Just before
I went with United, I flew up there in my Comanche, stayed at the motel on the
BFL airport, flew the few miles to the Contest. At that last contest I attended
at BFL, (until 1992) one of the contestants was Capt. Bill Morrison. I told
Bill that my airline career was over before it even began; I had already quit
TWA after 1 day; didn't like their attitude toward new hires. Correct move, on
my part. Quit American ditto; it was very important for me to get back to west
coast. Their Captain Buchanan said it would be impossible for years to get back
west.. Found out later that he didn't know what he was talking about. (Not the
last time I've gotten bad information in flight school!) It was due to Bill
Morrison that I went with United. He suggested I give them a try, and he didn't
even know I had received a letter from them offering employment. So, I went to
Denver, to United, and found an entirely new attitude. Even though you were a
newbie, they really welcomed you.
And Famoso.........another story entirely.
Lockheed used Famoso to fit out Ventura bombers secretly, so as not to break the
existing neutrality pact before the War opened.
But, that's another story.
