If you are building the frame over a flat building board, you can lay the
diagonal piece across the top of the frame, in position. Then you can judge
the angle to cut one end off at. I use a mitre saw (a flat modelling saw) up
against a 1" by 3" by 6" balsa block (to insure verticality) to make the
cut. Having done one end, re-trial fit the piece, with the finished end in
place, and you have a simpler task to get the second end right.
You may throw a few pieces away at first, but with some practice,you will
soon be making precision diagonals.
By the way, you can make a joint super-strong by gluing a butt plate over
the joint, which picks up both the diagonal piece and the longeron. 2mm lite
ply is perfect. Of course, do this on the INSIDE so you have a smooth
OUTSIDE. <g>
