Natural gas is plenty up here in Alberta. I'm pretty sure, if I dig my backyard I can start pumping natural gas!

  Bob:
I can't understand why they had standby generators with no means to fuel them. But, did they have any cans with gas for power mowers? If they had no intention of leaving their homes, did they try to siphon any gas from the family car? Or, if they had 2 cars, from the lesser used auto?
The generator I am considering for my own use will run on natural gas; while I am sure that stoppages of service have happened, still and all, I've never experienced an interruption of natural gas service.
Lessons to be learned by all of us, including me.

A lot of people had generators with no gas to run them. There were only a few gas stations in operation (in the whole of Detroit and surrounding metropolitan area) and the wait times were over three hours.

In the same vein, I look at the water towers around here, (Greensboro, NC) and consider just what would happen if we lost power for long. While there's water in the towers, it sure doesn't get up there by magic. And, while I've got a well, the pump works on electricity. I've been thinking about a standby generator to at least power some of the house for essentials.
Think about trying to buy gas to get out of town; no electricity to pump it.
We've sure become a technological society.

We just got our power back, slightly less than 24 hours after it went out. Our town has its own power plant, but it did not help. Seems it has been so long since they had to do a "black" start, the auxillary generators required to do so would not run. no one had checked them. We had water, our town also has its own water treatment facility and storage tower. But, we host a large waste treatment plant serving a large part of the Detroit Metropolitan area, and its backup generators also did not function. Some thunderstorms came through this morning and at 10:00AM the place was nearly full with no power to process the waste. So in spite of having water, we were strongly encouraged not to use it. I'm sure the city council meeting will be hopping Monday night.

Forget gas...we need water. I'd love to know why our local independant TV station has the forethought to have redundant generators, so we can all watch summer reruns on our propane powered TV's...but our utility company...who by the way has the convenience of sitting on the largest fresh water supply on the face of the planet, doesn't have a generator to pump it with. EEEERRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGG!!!
          Mark...dry in Cleveland.

Powers is back on here at 9:30p. Looks like we can make Glen after all. Gas was going to be an issue.
