adjusting valves on YS 120 FZ

The adjustment can be performed in the plane if you can easily remove the rocker cover.   Take the glow plug out and remove the rocker cover. Take care not to damage the gasket, or else have a new one ready. Turn the crank and observe how the cam pushes each valve open. Pick one of the valves to do first. Turn the crank until the valve is fully open, then rotate the crank 360 degrees. This will insure the cam lobe is out of the way (the cam spins 1/2 as fast as the crank, so 360 degrees of crank rotation is 180 degrees of cam rotation). Check the clearance by placing a 0.1 mm feeler gauge between the rocker arm and the valve stem. There should be a light resistance. If it is loose or tight, loosen the jam nut on the adjuster, then turn the adjuster screw until a slight resistance is felt (with the feeler between the rocker and the valve stem), then back off slightly and retighten the jam nut. You may have to repeat this until you get the hang of it. Repeat for the other valve. The specification for the valve clearance is given as 0.04mm-0.1mm, but looser is better than tighter, especially for the exhaust valve, helps it run cooler. If you do have to replace the rocker cover gasket, make sure none of the pieces of old gasket get left in the motor. Good luck.
