Gray,
No, actually what you say is absolutely true. There are
those who are willing to compete and those that are not.
Often, those who wont / dont / cant compete are going
to denigrate, disparage, and scorn those that do. They
cannot understand nor are they so incline to commit to
the discipline it takes to compete, regardless of the
activity.
There is a lot of arrogance and snobbery associated with
pattern simply because we do something that takes
dedication and determination. I am sure there are many
occasions where the labels are well deserved and an
individual has done the pattern community as a whole a
disservice by presenting himself as an elitist.
We, here in the North Dallas area, are very fortunate
that we have been able to attract at least a couple of
newbies every year. Like you, I try not to inflict my
addictions on anyone. BUT
if anyone even hints at an
interest in the plane, the flying style, etc. I try to
milk it for all its worth.
