I just finished covering my first big plane (Focus), and I have found that
different colors go on differently. I've done a lot of monokoting in the
past, but never solid surfaces as big as a pattern plane. Maybe it's just
me, but Insignia blue was easy to work with, True Red a bit more difficult,
Jet White even more difficult, and Metallic Gold was the hardest. Not a
huge difference, but it was noticeable. Maybe darker colors=easier?
Also, Ken Blackwell taught me to run the iron backwards, because the hottest
part of the iron is the heel, which lets the job cool slightly as the cooler
toe follows the warmer heel. And I discovered our glass kitchen table.
Wife not too happy about that! FWIW

Does anyone have any monocote covering techniques/secrets . . . Do you
use grain filler, etc.
I've read Dick Hanson's tip(s) but am looking for other options!
